Mel has been a major player on the Iowa scenario paintball scene for many years. He has hosted large events such as a Star Wars scenario and a Stargate scenario and done an outstanding job in coordinating these events. He is one of the most honorable players you'll ever meet and just a fun guy to talk to and hang out with. We recently had the pleasure of tossing paint with him out at the new Action Jacks field.
Stryker, we are honored to count you among our ranks!!
Saturday was an awsome day. The weather was great and we had a wonderful turnout. We ended up with about 35 people. Stryke brought out the youth from Adventure Life Church in Altoona. Gray Owl had a couple friends come and Wyld invited back a couple youth from the Cross-Walk event a couple years.
Check out the thread "August 16 Pictures" to hear more about the day, and see some pictures.
Thanks to Action Jacks for the private party and all who came out on Saturday.
The group before we started
We had more that came shortly after we took this photo.

Action Jacks Get's Green Light!
Woohoo! Shawn Risseeuw, owner of Action Jacks Paintball in Colfax, got some good news last night that he will be able to relocate to a new location in Newton. This has been an ongoing battle and it is great to hear that Shawn is getting the opportunity to take his business "down the road" where he can offer an even better place for us to play paintball.
I received the following email today from Shawn at Action Jack's... Maybe there is hope yet in them being able to relocate to Newton... Here is what Shawn had to say:
Well the struggle with the City of Newton continues. The process is taking way longer than I thought possible. Here is the current situation.
Monday August 4: City Council decides to send the issue back to planning and zoning. (Below is a link to an article in the Newton Daily News.)
Tuesday August 5: Planning and Zoning Meeting to discuss draft of a conditional use permit.
Not Scheduled Yet: Special Meeting with Planning and Zoning to Approve zoning change.
Monday August 18: City Council will Vote to approve zoning change with a conditional use permit. (This is the most critical step.) (We will have this meeting packed with supporters, and petitions.)
Wednesday August 20: Zoning Board of Adjustment to issue conditional use permit.
Support from the community of Newton has been unbelievable. Everyone I talk to is behind Action Jack's 100%. People I do not know, spontaneously on their own have been passing around petitions. The city staff, Mayor, Planning and Zoning, Zoning Board of Adjustment, half the city council, and 93% of Newton citizens are for us moving to Newton. The meeting on August 18 will be a very interesting one.
Thanks,
Shawn Risseeuw

AJs is denied
The mayor put Action Jacks back on the docket, however for some reason the council decided not to move on it, essentially preventing a buisness from entering the community. You'd think after suffering the loss of Maytag Newton would be desperate for new blood.
Apparently not.

Action Jacks needs your help!!
Omega just recieved this message from Shawn over at AJs:

Friends of Action Jack's Paintball,
As many of you know over the past 5 years we have been looking for a bigger and better location. More acres, more fields and property we can own. Well I have finally found that property. Now it is a matter of getting through all the red tape.
Monday, July 7 I went before the Newton City Council and requested a zoning change in order to purchase and develop 25 acres of land inside the Newton city limits. (This is a really great piece of land that will let us get back into the big scenario game business.) The council voted 3-3 on my request. This means that the resolution does not pass, but it can be brought up again at the next council meeting, July 21, if one of the city council members requests that it be reconsidered. I have already started working with one of those council members to do this. I am confident that I will be able to satisfy some of his concerns and he will request a reconsideration.
What I am asking friends of Action Jack's to do is go to the Newton Daily News website and give some positive feedback about Action Jack's in the comments section of the article that was run in today's, Tuesday, newspaper. I want to emphasize positive comments. Please don't criticize the council or city. Remember, I still have to work with these people to get this done.
The full article can be seen and read at this location: http://www.newtondailynews.com/articles/2008/07/08/news/local1.txt
At the bottom of the article is a section were you can register and leave comments. The comments do not show up immediately, they are screened to make sure nothing untrue or profane is posted. I think that it would really help if the council could see all the positive comments and see what an asset we would be to the community of Newton.
Thanks in advance for your help and your business over the past 10 years. It is appreciated.
PS: I will be getting more information out about the new location. We will move their as soon as possible. Goal is sometime in September. Freddy vs. Jason V on 25 acres end of October!!!!!

Anyone who has played there knows the quality type of operation that Shawn runs. I can't believe the city council was anything but unanimous on a decision like this. Land that has sat desolate for 7 years and someone wants to put a business there instead of leaving it to rot, and he was turned down? What developer wants to build by a railroad track... in Newton? Maybe city council members need to watch the news, there is a little something going on in regards to the housing market as of late. *cough* Regency *cough*
Go and post your comments.
'nuff said.
